Baseball's Charlie Kruer Named to A-10 All-Conference Team

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington senior outfielder Charlie Kruer (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) has been named to the Atlantic 10 Baseball All-Conference first-team in voting conducted by the league's head coaches, the league announced on Tuesday.
In the same voting, freshman right-handed pitcher Eric Cantrell (Oakton, VA/Oakton) was selected to the All-Rookie Team and junior first baseman Tim Reeves (Cumming, GA/North Forsyth) earned All-Conference Honorable Mention honors.
Charlie Kruer finished the 2008 regular season ranked in the top-ten in six separate offensive categories in the A-10. The outfielder was third in total bases (133) and slugging percentage (.633) and was tied for third in home runs (13), doubles (19) and RBI (56). In his last season at GW, he led the team in six major offensive categories, including hits (73), doubles and homers. He was also second with a .348 batting average and third with an on-base percentage of .420. Kruer, who was named Preseason A-10 All-Conference by Baseball America in February, will end his four-years as a Colonial ranked in the top-ten in eight career categories at GW, including fourth all-time with 39 home runs and 182 RBI. Kruer, GW's J. Dallas Shirley Outstanding Senior Male Athlete Award winner, was also selected to the 2007 All-Conference first team and was a 2006 All-Conference Honorable Mention.
Freshman Eric Cantrell, who missed two weeks to injury, quickly became one of the team's most dependable starting pitchers by the end of the year. He led the team in ERA (4.02), batting average against (.253) and was second with five wins and 66 strikeouts. In 71.2 innings pitched, Cantrell allowed just 17 walks and three home runs, fifth and seventh best in the A-10, respectively. The freshman right-hander worked at least eight innings in five of his 11 games started. Cantrell, who won InsidePitching.com's Northeast Region Performance of the Week (3/18) and A-10 Co-Rookie of the Week (5/12), earned a once-in-a-lifetime win when he pitched the Colonials past Saint Joseph's, 9-4, in the first ever game played at Nationals Park, the new home of MLB's Washington Nationals.

The third Colonial honored in Tuesday's voting was Tim Reeves, who was named All-Conference Honorable Mention. Reeves, who was selected A-10 Co-Player of the Week (4/28), was tied for fifth in the conference with a .362 batting average and 50 RBI. He recorded at least one hit in 38 of the 52 games he started, and led GW in hitting and multi-RBI games (13). He twice recorded four hits in one game, including a 4-for-6 performance with six RBI at Saint Louis in a 21-5 GW win (4/26). As impressive as he was at the plate, Reeves also excelled in the field and committed just three errors in 468 chances while recording 439 putouts and 26 assists in 49 games started at first base, good for a fielding percentage of .994, tops on the team and tied for fifth in the league.
Senior catchers Derek Mechling of Duquesne and Charlotte's Chris Taylor were named A-10 Baseball Players of the Year. Tom Davis, a RHP from Fordham, earned A-10 Pitcher of the Year honors and freshman Corey Shaylor of Charlotte was named Rookie of the Year. In the same vote, Xavier's Scott Googins was tabbed Coach of the Year.
Additionally, for the second consecutive year, St. Bonaventure's Randy Moley was named Student-Athlete of the Year in voting among the Conference's sports information directors.
George Washington was 26-29 overall in 2008 and 11-16 in the A-10. It was their 15th straight season with at least 20 wins.
