WASHINGTON, DC -- The Atlantic 10 Conference has announced the home/away schedule for the 2008-09 men's basketball season. The GW schedule features home-and-home series with Charlotte, La Salle and Richmond with dates and times to come later.
Under eighth-year head coach Karl Hobbs, GW will play three games against league opponents that qualified for the 2008 NCAA Tournament field when they face Saint Joseph's, Temple and Xavier. Other postseason A-10 opponents include 2008 NIT runner-up Massachusetts along with NIT participants Charlotte, Dayton and Rhode Island as well as two games against College Basketball Invitational (CBI) participant Richmond. The top 12 regular-season finishers qualify for the Atlantic 10 Championship, March 11-14, 2009, at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ.
GW will announce its entire schedule in September after all contracts have been signed.
GW's A-10 opponent schedule (dates and times TBA):
HOME GAMES: Charlotte, Dayton, Fordham, La Salle, Rhode Island, Richmond, St. Bonaventure, Temple
AWAY GAMES: Charlotte, Duquesne, La Salle, Massachusetts, Richmond, Saint Joseph's, Saint Louis, Xavier
After the Atlantic 10 expanded to a 14-team league prior to the 2005-06 season, a new scheduling format was adopted. This season, GW will play a home-and-home series against Charlotte, La Salle and Richmond. GW's travel partners the last two seasons were Rhode Island, Saint Louis and Xavier. The Colonials will face the other A-10 teams just once with home games against Dayton, Fordham, Rhode Island, St. Bonaventure and Temple in addition to the home games with Charlotte, La Salle and Richmond. GW will travel to Duquesne, Massachusetts, Saint Joseph's, Saint Louis and Xavier. The Saint Joseph's game will take place at Philadelphia's Palestra while the Saint Louis game will be played in the new Chaifetz Arena.
The Colonials, 9-17 (5-11 A-10) in 2007-08, return plenty of experience in seniors Rob Diggs, Wynton Witherspoon and Noel Wilmore, junior Damian Hollis and sophomores Xavier Alexander and Travis King. They will be joined by six other returning letterwinners and four newcomers.
