Golf Competes at Virginia Cavalier Classic in Final Tune-Up Before A-10 Championship

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA -- The George Washington golf team concludes the regular season this weekend in the 21st annual Virginia Cavalier Classic at the par-72, 6,879-yard Birdwood Golf Course April 26 and 27. The host Cavaliers are the defending champions for the event. The 36-hole tournament will feature 18 holes of competition on Saturday and Sunday. Both rounds will begin at 8 a.m. from the first tee.

The 21-team field for this year's tournament includes Appalachian State, Augusta State, Delaware, East Carolina, Elon, George Mason, George Washington, James Madison, Liberty, Longwood, Maryland, NC State, Old Dominion, Princeton, Radford, Saint Joseph's, Temple, Tennessee State, Seton Hall, UNCG and Virginia.

The Colonials are scheduled to begin play Saturday at 11:45 a.m. and will be paired with Delaware and fellow A-10 member Temple. A-10 rival Saint Joseph's also is among the field at Charlottesville.

GW is coming off a second-place finish at the Navy Spring Invitational last weekend. GW's Sebastian Palomares and Tyler Wendelken each carded a three-over-par 145 to tie for third place, six strokes off the pace. Palomares fired a three-under-par 68 on Saturday to take the lead after one round but carded a six-over 77 in the rain on Sunday. Wendelken shot a 74 Saturday and was even-par with a second-round 71 Sunday. A trio of Colonials, Lewis Sturdy, Eddie Newland and Brendan Barrack, tied for seventh place, each with a four-over 146.

 

 

Next up for the Colonials is the 54-hole Atlantic 10 Conference Championship, May 2-4, at Orange County National Golf Course in Winter Garden, FL, near Orlando.
