Men's Soccer Recruiting Class Rated Among Nation's Best

WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington men's soccer's 2008 recruiting class is ranked 27th in the country in CollegeSoccerNews.com's annual ranking of the nation's Top 40 recruiting classes. Incoming freshmen Yoni Berhanu and Brice Carr also are among the website's "100 Freshmen to Keep an Eye On in 2008."
Preseason A-10 All-Rookie Team selections Berhanu and Carr highlight a recruiting class described as "arguably the nation's biggest surprise on the recruiting trail," according to CollegeSoccerNews.com. Perennial national contender Saint Louis was the only other Atlantic 10 program to have a Top 40 recruiting class, coming in at No. 24.
Along with Berhanu and Carr, GW's 2008 recruiting class consists of Massachusetts All-State performers and club teammates Ryan Ruffing, Theo Terris and Mike Burke, 2007 Canadian U-17 National Team member Dave Thompson, Jake Davis, Aldin Dervisevic and Khaled El Sayad.
Berhanu, the District's reigning Gatorade Player of the Year, had 40 goals and 19 assists as a senior at Sidwell Friends School to earn first team All-Met honors from The Washington Post and All-Metro recognition from the Washington Examiner last fall.

Carr, a two-time adidas/NSCAA Youth Boys All-America selection (2004, 2007), spent his senior year as a member of the United States' U-17 National Team residency program at IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL, and was an alternate for the 2007 U.S. U-17 World Cup team. Prior to IMG Academy, Carr was a three-year starter at Marquette University High School where he helped the Hilltoppers to a state championship in 2005 and earned first team all-state honors in 2006.
Ruffing recently was named to the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) Development Academy's Northeast U-17/18 Starting XI, which honors the northeast region's Top 11 club players in the age group.
GW begins defense of last fall's DC College Cup title in its 2008 season opener against George Mason Friday, Aug. 29, at American's Reeves Field.
