Complete Xavier Match Results
MONROEVILLE, PA - Top-seeded George Washington (14-10, 9-2 A-10) was upset by No. 2 Xavier (16-8, 9-0 A-10) in the finals of the 2008 Atlantic 10 Men's Tennis Championship by a final score of 4-0, early Sunday afternoon in Monroeville, PA. It is the first A-10 Conference title for Xavier men's tennis, who earned an automatic bid into the 2008 NCAA Men's Tennis Championship with the win.
The loss marked the eighth time GW has finished second in the tournament, and the third time since the 2001-02 season. The Colonials were also runner-ups in 1993-96, 1999, 2002 and 2004. The program's lone conference championship came in 1979.
Second-seeded Xavier held the early advantage, with the No. 1 pairing of Doug Matthews and sophomore Chris Herrlinger besting their opponents from top-seeded George Washington, 8-6, to clinch the doubles point. Herrlinger also took his No. 2 singles match, 7-6(4), 7-5 before junior teammate Ra'ees Ismail prevailed in a hard fought victory from the No. 3, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. That left Matthews with the opportunity to seal the match and he delivered, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, over GW's senior Mustafa Gencsoy.
The GW pair of freshman Yan Levinski and senior Sam Salyer claimed the No. 3 flight doubles, 8-6.
In other tournament action, junior Jonathan Luce lifted fifth-seeded St. Bonaventure past third-seeded Charlotte in dramatic fashion with a No. 3 singles victory, 6-2, 7-6 (10-4), as the Bonnies took the third-place match. The victory marks the highest finish for the Bonnies since 2005, when they also finished third.
